SS Trike creator on the economy: ‘Deal with it’

Having a good business plan can mean the difference between success and failure. Centergy, central Wisconsin’s regional economic development agency, recently recognized a Rudolph business owner as the first-place winner of its first Business Plan Contest.

The Daily Tribune recently talked with Jason Nieman, owner of Olmax Fabrication, about his winning plan for his new SS Trike motorcycle, and how he hopes to grow his business.

Question: How did you get started in the business?

Answer: I’ve been making things it seems like forever. I started right after high school. I got started because I didn’t want to pay somebody to do something that I could do myself. … I owned an autobike shop and I built drag race cars. Then I went out east, and when I came back, I decided to build motorcycles.

Q: How has the economy affected the business?

A: I guess a person has to be smarter now. I think it’s really interesting how people in business complain that they can’t do something because of the economy. Your job as a business is to deal with it. You have to be flexible. … If there’s an opportunity, you have to take it.

Q: What advice would you give people who are considering starting a business?

A: I’d say ask a lot of questions from a lot of people. Get a lot of advice from people that you trust. … Normally, most people will help you or give you some sort of advice. Whether or not you take it is up to you.

Q: What factors contribute to your success?

A: I don’t know that I feel successful yet. I probably would say persistence. You just have to keep going.

Q: What led to the creation of your new product, the SS Trike, and how did it go from a concept to reality?

A: The product has been being developed for more than two years now. We saw the motorcycle industry was going in a downward direction as far as sales go, and we saw people were bored with the market and were looking for something new. We were at a point in the project where we needed to refocus our energy on our business plan.

Q: What opportunities or challenges do you see in the future?

A: We do see some challenges with filling (some positions). Right now, we’re looking for more people. It’s about getting the right person who has the drive for what we need to do.
